Tallow

A brief history

Since our beginnings, animal fats have proven beneficial to daily life.

The uses for animal fats are numerous & diverse.

Food, medicinal, beauty & functional practicalities

are some of the ways people have found to utilize this versatile substance.

The ancient Egyptians & earliest peoples of Mesopotamia are examples of some of the first recorded

uses of Tallow specifically. A valuable commodity of those days; Tallow was used for soaps, balms, food

flavoring, candle making & food preservation.

The widespread use of Tallow continued through Medieval times, early American settlement, &

during the Civil War. With the Industrial Revolution, however, Tallow fell out of favor when chemists

made discoveries like the hydrogenation of seed oils (trans fats) that could be produced cheaper.

Tallow, is the rendered fat derived from beef or mutton suet. Suet is the hard fat that surrounds the

organs. High in vitamins & fatty acids, this fat shares some of the same properties needed in our skin

to maintain structural support to our cells.

Cabin & Creek uses all Beef Tallow, responsibly sourced from local farms, that is grass-fed & both hormone & antibiotic free.

Tallow's Natural Properties

  • Vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12
  • Triglycerides, specifically palmitic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid
  • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and oleic acid

NOT ALL TALLOW IS CREATED EQUALLY

At Cabin & Creek, we procure Beef Suet from local farms that is hormone- free, antibiotic-free & grass-fed. This ensures that we are beginning with the highest quality of nutritionally superior fats for all our Tallow Bodygoods.

As Chefs, we use our culinary experience to process the raw material ourselves, & use very specific methods of purification, that retain the natural vitamin & mineral content. We carefully filter the rendered Tallow to 400 microns, which makes it nearly scentless.

Why it Matters?

jars on kitchen counter

We hear it all the time...

"I've tried Tallow before. But yours is so different!"

Why?

Because we thoughtfully procure, create, blend & process.

If you won't put in the effort to make it properly & well,

then you won't get a quality result.

Beware of the Tik Tokers & YouTubers who say you can just throw some fat scraps into a crockpot & beautiful Tallow magically appears. Their process & advice on Tallow-making is haphazard, & ignorant of processing methods, & therefore results in inferior Tallow. The markets are full of it: Inferior Tallow products at exuberant prices. Most people just do not realize the complexity of the process, nor do they have the equipment necessary to produce Tallow the way we do & are instead looking to make a quick buck.

We encounter crafters of all trades trying to jump on the Tallow bandwagon & offer Tallow products that they do not produce themselves or only partially "make". With Cabin & Creek, you can be assured that Tallow Bodygoods are our passion & we produce each batch with care from start to finish.
